Contraception (from Latin "against conception") can be defined as any method used to prevent pregnancy. Different methods can be used in different ways and at different times of life. Each person has the right to freely and informedly choose the preferred method. Many couples decide together what method to use.
The use of contraceptives allows many people to enjoy their sex life without having to worry about an unwanted pregnancy. Male and female condoms also allow people to enjoy sex with less worry about sexually transmitted infections.
Most contraceptive methods are used by women; only a few methods are used by men. In the past, many men expected women to take full responsibility for pregnancy prevention. Nowadays, many men share this responsibility, a man can share such responsibility by:
Some contraceptive methods block the access of spermatozoa through the cervix to reach the egg (ovule) (barrier methods, condoms and diaphragm), and they should be used at every sexual intercourse. Others influence the hormones that determine fertility in the body to stop the ovaries from releasing an egg each month or by creating an environment in which a fertilized egg cannot develop, and they can be used daily or less frequently, independently, if sexual relations occurred or not. (Hormonal methods, which offer the best protection for an unwanted pregnancy (Combined oral contraceptives (COC); Emergency contraception; Injectable contraceptive; Hormonal patch; Subdermal implants; Vaginal ring (NuvaRing)) or intrauterine device method (IUD).
Most contraceptives influence the ability to procreate (fertility) in a reversible way, that is, when their use is stopped, fertility is restored. Only female or male surgical sterilization is irreversible (tubectomy/vasectomy)
Some methods might have medical contraindications for some individuals, so it is good to consult the gynecologist to choose the most suitable method. Sometimes people may try several methods until they find the right one. Sometimes, contraceptive methods could cause some discomfort or side effects - this needs to be discussed with the doctor in each individual case and to make decisions based on the evaluation of the ratio between risks and benefits. Some methods, on the contrary, could have additional beneficial effects or treat certain female health problems, such as painful periods, endometriosis, abnormal bleeding, etc.
