Menstruation and Hygiene

Introduction

During puberty, girls' bodies undergo fertility or menstrual cycles. Unlike males, who are continuously fertile from puberty onwards, females can only get pregnant on certain days of their cycle. The length of the cycle varies from person to person, but is generally about a month. During each cycle, the female body goes through many changes. The most obvious part of the cycle is the menstrual bleeding, also called menstruation or "period".

We often think of menstruation as the culmination of the cycle, but menstruation is only one part of an amazing series of changes that occur during the cycle. These changes are how the body prepares for a potential pregnancy. These include the production of cervical mucus, the growth and release of an egg (female sex cell, ovule), and changes in the layers of the uterus. These changes are controlled by hormones (natural chemicals produced by bodily glands and carried in the blood).

These hormonal changes affect many parts of the female body and how women feel and function. Knowing about these changes can give a girl or woman a greater sense of comfort and control over her body. A woman can learn simple techniques to identify when she is ovulating and when her period is due.

Thus, a menstrual cycle represents the physiological changes that occur mainly in the female genital organs and the entire female body under the action of female sex hormones produced cyclically, which usually last 28 days but can vary between 21-35 days.

MENSTRUATION, in turn, is a natural function of the body for the reproductive health of women and girls. It is manifested by bleeding from the uterus, which is eliminated through the vagina. Menstruation usually comes monthly for a period of 2-7 days. It is absolutely NORMAL and HEALTHY for teenage girls to have menstruation!
